Abstract expressionism traditionally idolizes individual moments. My bold abstractions tell entire stories through vivacious mixed media like acrylic and spray paint with a focus on climax and culmination– the end results of real interactions. I work entirely in abstraction because I’m seeking abstract themes from the in-between. My multidisciplinary practice spans studio painting, public murals, and client commissions, united by a signature sense of gesture and purpose. Stories serve my greatest inspiration, but their perspective springs from my own.
My career started 20 years ago in Serbia, where I worked avidly as a fashion designer. Every collection included hand-painted elements and asymmetry–the early days of my practice’s present colorful chaos, its delicate balance. I transitioned to painting when I moved to Chicago in 2007. I’d always planned to leave home—recognized the limits Serbia’s economic state implied at the hands of NATO bombs and all the rest. Moving to America was a reset. Though I held executive-level achievements in Serbia, I started at square one. In ESL classes I came to appreciate the immense diversity of this place, alongside its ongoing injustices.
Tales of overcoming have always been my favorite. Studio work offers the artist catharsis, but painting for other people provides an emotional service. Commissioned work starts with a conversation between myself and an individual or wider community. Once a story pours into my soul it’s then alchemized into material possibilities like color palettes and arrangements of texture. Time is an unseen medium–I take regular intervals to step away. There are intentional moments of leading and following in my practice, chasing and being chased. All the planning is my being chased, receiving both stories and subconscious guidance.
Painting is the chasing, a meditative dance honed through breathing and my own yoga practice. Each artwork holds its own bespoke symbolic language suited to its story. Shapes become characters, drops and splashes direct the flow of energy and action. My own handwriting punctuates every tale with an exclamation point–loops of automatic writing like actual words the viewer inadvertently projects their own narrative onto. Survivorship is just one badge a person wears. I include every part of a story from rising action to denouement to honor variety within the human experience. They manifest as layers.
Every time life requires a reset, my commitment to art gains renewed vigor. An assuredness that, like everyone, I must keep going at any cost. This assuredness grounds the necessary, omnipresent uncertainty in my painting practice. Although my background in design lends an at times unconventional approach to abstract expressionism, uncertainty creates space for the moment. Every project must provide room for unexpected problem solving, like jazz.
Maybe it’s the designer in me, but art should have a function. Someday I would like my practice to yield a physical space where creatives can congregate and communicate. Until then, the various channels in my practice serve a common purpose to elevate authentic stories and inspire viewers to recognize the immense potential within them. Every ephemeral spirit contains entire volumes, from rising action to denouement. My abstractions dance towards the liminal space where passion, moments, and music meet the concrete: color, texture, and details.

View collectionGrace Federighi
Grace, a multifaceted artist, brings her talents to the art world as a fine art figurative painter, photographer, and fashion creative, producing art that is both contemporary and timeless. Her figurative work reflects women’s strong and beautiful complexities emanating, mystery, edge and sophistication. Her contemporary approach merges abstract strokes, and textural layers to ignite feels of modern romanticism and sensuality.
Grace draws inspiration from models she photographs in her studio and on her travels. Once she decides on the image, she adapts a message influenced by the movement of the captured pose or the way a shadow falls on skin. This connection continues to evolve as she paints the figure at times adding charcoal and metallic foil. The control is always established, whether it is a theme or a series of work, but the progression is intuitive and adventurous.
At times, Grace allows the paint to guide her as it glides and seeps into linen canvas. Combining a variety of techniques and mediums, she pushes her figurative abstraction to create a timeless elegance of bold work.
Living a life in art began with Grace’s childhood in Krakow, Poland. Using elements of nature, and items found around the home, she would make a cardboard dollhouse, floral head wreaths and draw in chalk doll-like figures on the outside building walls of her family’s rental apartment.
After immigrating to the U.S., Grace pursued business for financial security. Even with this career plan, she never fully never stopped painting or photography. While working and raising two boys alongside her husband, Grace began to create charcoal figurative art and street photography and developed a collector following.
An unexpected life change prompted Grace to fully return to the journey started outside her Krakow apartment. Over the years, Grace has exhibited in both group and private art shows, collaborated with local businesses, national retailers, interior designers, curators and has had her work featured in showcase houses, advertorial campaigns, and on HGTV.

Painting represents a leap of faith and a belief that turning the lens on oneself will yield something of value. When I face a blank canvas I don’t know where I am headed but I am curious to see where I will go. Current events challenge long held perceptions and seep into my psyche and my work. I am influenced by recent pivotal events and my place in the world as a woman.
Shape and line work are fundamental to my abstract practice. As I work on a painting the meaning and relationship of these elements evolves with each layer.
Along the way, I start to see a connective thread. Like breadcrumbs, I follow until the painting and I are comfortable with each other, and the dialogue between us has matured. There is now a clarity about what the painting is about. I will edit if I feel there is clutter or may add more marks to refine the story. This final stage of a painting is my favorite.

My paintings reflect my experience—the changes I’ve gone through in my life—the new things, the old things, the past, and the present. Each painting is an experience that takes time and it’s created in stages. I add and delete elements as I paint and often return to old paintings to recreate and reinvent them. In some ways, I never really see a painting as finished.
The things that interest me aren’t representational, they are emotional and universal: the feeling of space and texture and layers. The designer in me sees the balance of composition, color, shape, and scale.
Several of my paintings are named with the word beyond in the title, something I think about very often. Why beyond? I think it’s because I’m fascinated by the primitive and infinite beauty of how I imagine space to be beyond our vision and our own environment. It’s bigger than I am, bigger than we are. But the realities of a canvas—its edges, lines, and borders—serve as a metaphor for the boundaries that I place on myself. I’m a naturally private person with a narrow comfort zone. The adding and removing of layers of paint speak to my desire to hide from the unknown. But being private doesn’t mean being isolated. I am surrounded by family and friends. In the end, I am both excited by—and hesitant to enter—the world that exists beyond my control.

In my work, I create large scale paintings using fast, flowing marks and layers of grounded tone upon tone.
I explore gestural movement to create assertive abstract artwork. Inky tones and earthy colors fill the canvas with textured, transparent layers scraping away to reveal what was once impressed upon the canvas. A sweeping score. A flash of a stroke made with a carpenter’s trowel. A deceptively simple composition. My work is bold and unapologetic. Aggressively calm. Dynamic. Honest.
Rejecting physical form and influenced by Brancusi’s geometric shapes, I confidently place one hue next to another to pull the viewer into the painting. My work is both urgent and quiet at the same time. A dichotomy of feelings. A layering of emotion.

I have lived by this beautiful quote throughout my life.
My creative spirit, warm heart, and openness to all possibilities has enhanced an undeniable passion for the arts. Growing up in Riverside, IL in a warm family environment formed the heart of the artist I have become today.
I have always embraced that art has not defined me. Rather my artistic process and how I create has evolved alongside my life experiences.
My passion led me into a career as an art teacher and now an independent studio artist behind beloved signature pieces and commission work.
My artwork captures the calm and wild of the world that collectors love.
One of my most notable signature collections is the Sand & Storm series. Art enthusiasts love my art because it is serene, balanced and emotional.I have lived by this beautiful quote throughout my life.
